LEARNING TO LOVE LIKE JESUS

Jesus did not simply teach us how to love—He showed us how to love.

John 13:34–35 — “A new commandment I give you, that you love one another; as I have loved you…By this all will know you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”

JESUS LOVED PEOPLE WHO WERE DIFFERENT   (Read Luke 19:1-10)    

 

Jesus saw Zacchaeus as a person who needed Him, not only as a sinner everyone else disliked.

Discuss:   A) Who are some people who may be different from us?   B)  Why is it sometimes difficult to love people who are different?   C)  What would Jesus do if He were standing beside us?

Challenge: This week, speak to, encourage, or show kindness to someone you might normally overlook.

JESUS LOVED PEOPLE WHO NEEDED MERCY   (Read Luke 10:30–37)  

 

This reminds that love is more than feeling sorry for someone. Love sees a need and does something about it.

Discuss:  A) How did the Samaritan show love?   B)  What keeps us from helping others?  C)  Who needs help right now?

Challenge:  Find one person you can help this week—and do it without expecting anything in return.

JESUS LOVED ENOUGH TO FORGIVE   (Read Luke 23:33–34)  

Even being crucified, Jesus prayed for those who hurt Him. His love was not based on how others treated Him.

Discuss:  A) Can forgiveness be difficult?   B)  How should we respond to one who hurts us?   C) Who do I need to forgive?

Challenge:  Pray together for the strength to forgive someone who has hurt you.

JESUS LOVED BY SERVING OTHERS   (Read John 13:12–17)

Jesus washed His disciples’ feet. He demonstrated that great love is willing to humble itself and serve.

Discuss:  A) What did Jesus give up to serve?  B) How can we serve at home? C) Who can I serve this week?

Challenge:  Choose one act of service each family member will do this week.
